Hello again folks!
Funny old weather this! I've been away to see my family and en route got diverted because of floods, saw another 4 closed roads that had me doubling back on myself more than once and finally ended up in a storm. Saturday morning saw us diverted yet again for major flooding - my hearts go out to those affected. It's supposed to be summer....... when's it going to happen???? Come on weather get your act together! I'm really fed up of wearing my winter clothes!
Today has been another day where I've been thinking about what to do next. I need some more galleries to stock my work - those that already stock me are showing good sales, but I really need more spread across the country. I'd love to know how others approach stockists - I fear there is a magic formula unknown to me!! I've tried asking in the past, but that hasn't always worked either! Is there a way to become un-shy when approaching sellers? How do galleries find their new talent? I'm open to ideas so do let me know!
This weekend sees the opening of the Flameworks Summer Exhibition 'Pushing The Boat Out' at the Relegacy Gallery, New Street, The Barbican, Plymouth. I've submitted work, but won't actually know what (if anything) will be included until I get there. My husband, David Muddyman, is also hoping to exhibit this time so we'll keep our fingers crossed. For those interested the exhibition runs from 21st until the 29th July and is closed on Mondays.
Over the next week I plan to work on dyeing some new designs (preferably without the black thumb debacle of last time *note to self, buy sturdier gloves) and cutting them into some very exciting designs. I'd really like to see if I could combine bronze with aluminium......... hhhhmmmmmm........new ideas............. watch this space!! And remember, you saw it here first!
Finally, did you all tell your other halves that if they really loved you they'd buy you a Shades Of Grey pendant? If not, whyever not? Direct them here with indecent haste!!! http://slicksilverjewellery.co.uk/page16.htm
See you all next week!

Bronze and Blossom
Hello folks, today is our first wedding anniversary and so much has happened during the last year - very many changes on a personal level. I no longer have a day job! Now I feel properly self-employed (my business was formalised in 2008 but was very part-time up until recently). I've expanded my aluminium range to launch my Signature Collection on the website, which marries the material with silver elements and designs where I can explore my creative ideas.
On leaving my job after 17 years, my lovely colleagues gave me some money 'to be spent on jewellery tools' and so I bought a kiln and I've been experimenting since it's arrival with textures from nature on bronze. These are not yet available for purchase but will be in to not too distant future. I'm always drawn to texture and colour around me and I've been making moulds from just about everything I can find! Even the cat's started to eye me up warily and not stay in one place too long!!
I've used silver clay many times in the past, but always torch fired it which was fine. Bronze clay, unless it's a very small piece, doesn't fire as successfully with a torch and not all of the pieces fired successfully in the kiln, but I think I have the measure of it now. #crossesfingersandtoes
These pieces were cast from pieces of wood and the ring was taken directly from a lump of lavarock and has an adjustable silver ring band.
I've finally launched my Cherry Blossom collection on the website this week too. Thank you to all those of you who've given me such lovely comments on this one. I think it's going to be a favourite of mine in the same way that Surf's Up was. You can find Cherry Blossom at http://slicksilverjewellery.co.uk/page10.htm
So, in other news, yesterday was a bit of an emotional one! All mums out there will know that no matter how big your kids are etc etc.....
Yesterday I packed my very grown up son off on the train that would take him to London, then Heathrow, then Australia - where he's off travelling for 3 months. He's going to have a fabulous time and he'd better bring me a wallaby back or else......
Tomorrow we're off to our favourite place in all of UK - St. Ives. We went to St. Ives for our honeymoon so where else could we possibly go for our anniversary? Galleries, here we come!!

SlickSilver Jewellery - The Return!
Well hello all - I'm back from my travels yet again!
We had a wonderful week in London, housesitting for friends in West Hampstead and getting out each day to visit galleries and exhibitions and new places. My husband, artist and composer David Muddyman, spent most of his life living in the capital, indeed until 5 years ago when he moved to Plymouth and met me, so he truly knows his way around.
As we both love contemporary art, we're perfectly happy to wander around looking at new work and great jewellery and we both found things to inspire us especially in Tate Modern and Electrum Gallery, such exquisite innovative jewellery. One moment that was really lovely was going into Studio Fusion Gallery in Oxo Towers http://www.studiofusiongallery.co.uk, where we met Louise O'Neill. She took time to tell us about all of the artists involved in Studio Fusion and even showed me her kiln - in all, a really nice lady to have met.
Last monday saw us visiting Brighton (a first for me) which was great but very wet. It literally poured with rain so we dashed into a shop, bought 2 umbrellas and came back out to glorious sunshine and blue sky and no more rain - oh well!
Since I came back I've been producing new sheets of aluminium pattern ready for cutting. Very soon you will be able to buy Cherry Blossom and Coral Reef from my website.
I plan to turn these two gorgeous sheets into a limited number of cuffs, pendants and earrings and perhaps a necklace. The sheets are approximately 10 x 7 inches.
I'm always inspired by nature and I've also been making moulds this week of tree bark, woodgrain, lavarock and all sorts of things in anticipation of my kiln arriving.......one day my kiln will come..........
Ok folks off to wait for the kiln delivery man! I think he may be walking......

Galleries, Museums and birds
This blog is being bought to you this week from London! We're house-sitting for friends and taking the opportunity to visit galleries and other lovely places!
Yesterday was a wonderful day which was spent at the Victoria & Albert Museum, where we idled many happy hours in the ceramics, contemporary glass, silver and jewellery sections. My husband is an artist and we are both inspired by colour and texture and whilst we don't always like the same pieces, we are generally happy in the same sections particularly the more contemporary works! I found the more modern jewellery so inspirational. This gorgeous collection of blue birds were made as an installation by Claire Twomey using various shades of Wedgewood clay.
Today was shopping day - well, it has to be done, doesn't it?! Of course, we had to look at all the shoe shops and jewellery shops! We finished the day in Hatton Garden - it's a good thing that I'm not into diamonds!! I did come away with a Cookson's new catalogue and plenty of ideas for my wishlist.
We're hoping to fit in a visit to Tate Modern, the Lanes in Brighton and as many other lovely arty places as we can.
On that note - I'm off for a cosy night tucked up with my Cookson's catalogue!
See you next week.

Afternoon Tea and Galleries
Hi folks, I'm a little bit late this week, sorry about that, life took over!
Well, this week we had a real treat - as some of you may know already, we got married last year and we were given a voucher for afternoon tea for two. Various reasons have prevented us going for it until yesterday, but we set off to find Lewtrenchard Manor and soon found ourselves in an absolutely stunning location. I have lived near the Devon/Cornwall border for more than 24 years, but I'd never been there before. The gorgeous house surpassed our expectations and we found ourselves seated in the library, quite alone, with dainty china and a cake stand with tiny crustless sandwiches, fabulous cakes and of course, scones, jam and cream! It was a lovely afternoon, a lovely gift and something we probably wouldn't have otherwise done. Anyone drooling yet?!?
This week I've been experimenting with some new textures and shapes in aluminium and have been working on distorting the shapes with my rolling mill which kind of gives a faded effect to the applied pattern/printed/dyed surface. I think I like the slightly industrial feel so I shall continue to explore this and let you see a finished item soon.
On the news front my attention was caught by a report that yet another highstreet store has ripped off the designs of Tatty Devine. It must be so awful as a designer to have this happen. Such companies can afford to mass produce and ultimately sell at a much lower cost than the bona fide designer can. I appreciate that working in similar materials may mean comparison between two or more designers but we all want to work the material in a way that is our own. There are several designers working in anodised aluminium like myself and I strive to make sure that I'm doing something different and something which is recognisably 'me'. I really hope that Tatty Devine takes this to court and wins.
Again on the news front, there is a package of my work winging it's way up to a gallery in Inverness as I type! You will soon be able to buy my jewellery from Hung in Inverness, Scotland http://www.hung-inverness.co.uk and it's also to be found in Gallery Atelier http://www.gallery-atelier.co.uk/ in Barnstaple too! Exciting times. See you all in a couple of weeks as I'm off on my travels for a little while - tell you all about it when I get back!

It's A Double Giveaway!
Hello again! Well, it's been a funny old week as my husband has been away and Layla the cat seems to have taken the absence of her favourite man personally. She keeps glaring at me as if I've got him hidden somewhere and I wouldn't mind, but she's actually my cat and I had her before we met!
I also started another blog on food - we are foodies after all. Look out for http://slickysfantasyfoodhaul.blogspot.com/
I was hoping to have another blog collaborator this week, however, things have not quite worked out that way and we shall have to wait until another time for the person I had in mind. Next week, however, I hope we shall have another exciting collaboration to look forward to! So, to make up for not having another artist this week I thought we'd have a little giveaway - details at the bottom of the page.
So, what else has been happening on the jewellery front? Following my shoulder surgery I've only just started making again so I've been mixing up new dyes (a mid pink, a deep coral and a lovely gold) and trying out some new dyeing techniques. I tend to texture my aluminium after dyeing and cutting as that helps me to maximise the best areas of the design, however, I have been experimenting with cutting a much smaller sheet, dyeing it once, heavily texturing it and then dyeing it again. As this only produces a small amount of usable material (commonly the edges of the sheet are lost through trimming) I plan to use this technique to produce some very special signature pieces.
This week I've been chatting by email to Twitter friend S L Jewellery and Accessories about our dreams and plans and about approaching galleries to feature our work. Today I went into a new gallery and looked at the jewellery on offer. There were a couple of empty shelves in their display cabinets and I noticed that they didn't sell anything like I make. I took a chance and introduced myself to the owner. I always carry business cards and leaflets that show my work, although I don't normally take the cold approach as it doesn't often work. I guess today was just pure luck, right time right place, etc etc because the gallery owner is very keen to stock my jewellery. Hopefully it will come to fruition! Normally if I see I gallery that I like, I email them and ask them to take a look at my website and to let me know if they would be interested in stocking me. What does everyone else do in this tricky situation? Similarly if there are any gallery owners out there reading this - how do you prefer to be approached? I'd love you to let me know what you think.
So the competition then! The above sample is taken from my Poppies collection - what I'd like to know is - how many different aluminium sets are currently available on my website for sale?
The prizes? Yes, there's two!! And you're not going to be able to see them this time! I'll be giving away two aluminium rings which are adjustable to two lucky winners and the competition closes on Monday 24th October at 7pm.
So get checking and leave your answer as a comment below!

Inspirations
This week, whilst still exploring and learning about online marketing, I have been thinking about the sorts of things that inspire me. Really I'm yearning to start making again, but physically my shoulder hasn't recovered enough for that yet - so let's take a look at my inspiration board. It sits obediently at the side of my workbench and I glance at it periodically, but I'm not entirely sure that I'm using it as I should. It's covered in pictures I really like, postcards, odd ideas that I've tried (some of them really odd!!), love notes, business cards, application forms, a couple of little paintings by my husband etc, but does all that just make it a noticeboard??? When does a noticeboard become an inspiration board anyway? I feel like it needs to fulfill it's potential by being draped with beautiful swatches, colour charts and the like and perhaps I'm letting it down a little - holding it back as it were.
Reticulated Sterling Silver Pendant with Blue Seaglass |
So here's the thing. I like having somewhere to keep the bits I don't want to throw away. If I'm really honest, my inspiration comes from what I see outside the house. I can go into raptures over the colour and texture of an old stone wall, rusty metal, lichen (don't get me started!), the bark of a tree and whilst I don't always try to recreate those textures, I do believe that they show in my work, particularly in my reticulated silver.
Recently on honeymoon in St Ives we spent a great deal of time in galleries, in fact, there were few we missed in the area. There are a couple of places that I particularly love that we visited again and previous visits had led me to some designs. The first is Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden. Her amazing scultpures immediately make me wish I was at my bench. My other favourite place is the Tate overlooking the beach, particularly out on the rooftop coffee shop on a gorgeous sunny day. I don't think there's a more stunning view. Recently I was colouring a sheet of aluminium, and as I've said previously, I'm never quite sure what the final result will be, but as soon as this particular sheet came out of the dye bath I knew what it would be called. This collection is called The View From The Tate and if you've ever visited the area and seen the amazing light you'll know what I meant.
The View From The Tate Cuff and Pendant (there's also earrings available) and indeed the silver pendant above are all available from me should anyone be interested in buying them by contacting me at info@slicksilverjewellery.co.uk
or through my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/SlickSilver-Jewellery/241037522592328 or you can contact me on Twitter at SlickSilverJ
One final shoutout this week to my lovely Twitter friend S L Jewellery and Accessories. She wrote a great blog about me but she also makes beautiful wedding jewellery and button bouquets which deserve a look so check out her site at http://www.sljewelleryandaccessories.co.uk/

The Frustrations Of A Recovering Designer/Maker
Hello world,
A lot has happened since I last blogged and it is my intention to be a more frequent blogger from now on! The most major change since last time is that I got married and anyone who wants to see a picture, scroll down to the bottom of the page for a sneaky look! As you can probably tell, it was for the second time but it really was the most fantastic sunny day to get married by the sea to a wonderful man with our families and friends around us. Following the wedding we had a honeymoon in a former artists' studio in St Ives and spent all of our time wandering around galleries, partly getting inspiration for new work, partly meeting inspiring people and just occasionally thinking that our work was ok after all!! An hour or two peace and quiet in Barbara Hepworth's garden led to some new ideas for jewellery being sketched out for trial at a later date.
The second major thing to happen to me recently, just two weeks ago, was planned surgery on my right shoulder and yes I am right-handed! I sadly oiled my tools, tidied my bench and shut the door on my studio for a while. I know that it will be some time yet before I have enough movement and little enough pain to be able to venture in there again. Because I knew that I would be having surgery I worked hard beforehand to build up a store of new designs. Part of my plan for my recovery time has been to work on my online presence and to convince myself that marketing is fun. Like most creative people I would much rather make jewellery than try to sell my work, however, my bank balance does not approve. As I've now got to the stage where I can move my arm from the elbow down ok, it's time to get on with some laptop based work and to resist the urge to buy things!
At the bottom of my blog you will see where you can buy my work from and whilst I do hope that you will take the time to have a look, it caused me to ponder whether people like buying jewellery online. I'm always open to ideas about how to best present my work so please let me know if you have any suggestions.
So, for the rest of this week I shall continue to rest and be waited upon whilst my reluctant mind absorbs computery stuff and I pick the brains of my long-suffering other half and Twitter friends.
See you here next week!
